Madonna Reportedly ThisClose to Launching a Macy’s Line

Sources tell WWD that Madonna is close to signing a deal to launch a clothing line for Macy’s. The line will be done with licensees of Iconix, which owns Candie’s, Bongo, Rampage, London Fog, Rocawear, Danskin and Badgley Mischka. The great minds at Iconix are also responsible for Candie’s brilliant marketing campaign, starring Britney Spears.

Whereas the Olsens launch collections with names seemingly unrelated to them (“Elizabeth and James,” “Olsenboye”), Madonna’s collections would be unmistakably hers. The apparel line will reportedly be called Material Girl, while she may get a bit saucier with Truth or Dare for the lingerie line, eschewing the perhaps more fitting Bedtime Story. No word on whether shoes and accessories would get clever names of their own.

Madonna previously did a one-off line for H&M, and at the time H&M executives were going on about how involved she was down to the very last button and whatnot. WWD notes:

The singer is known to demand total creative control over her projects, which is one of the reasons she has yet to launch a fragrance, even though she has tried to do so for more than a decade. Beauty companies have been reluctant to meet her financial demands, while many question whether her appeal remains as strong as it once was.

Well yeah, a fragrance probably isn’t the best product vehicle for her. Who wants to smell like Madonna? We always imagined that would be a combination of deodorant plus sweat plus baby powder plus gym, which doesn’t sound like the most appealing perfume formula. If she wants to get into the business of making personal effects for women, she should make a line of anti-wrinkle creams and call it “the Beast Within.”
