Today WWD highlights the style of 22-year-old La Roux singer Elly Jackson. “If you gave me 10 pairs of Manolos, I would sell them on eBay,” she says. “I don’t care about high heels; I don’t care about dresses. I would even go so far as to say they are ugly.” When she was a tot, she decided she didn’t want to wear girlie dresses and starting wearing tracksuits and pants instead. She cites Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, and Tilda Swinton as her style inspirations.
“I don’t want to be a man,” she says. “I very much enjoy being a woman — I love my body, and the sexiness of being a woman — but I like men’s clothes.”
Jackson used to re-create designer looks with her stylist when she couldn’t afford the originals, but now she can dress in head-to-toe McQueen. She will wear JCDC when she performs at Coachella. But nothing has become more of a signature than her hair:
Her look has been copied by girls all across London and even in Topshop’s windows, but Jackson is tired of discussing her signature red do.
“I am pretty ready to get rid of the hair, but I am kind of attached to it,” she says. “At the same time, I am kind of fed up with talking about it.”
No! It looks like whipped cream! She doesn’t need to lose it, she just needs a cherry for it.
