Now we know the economy is looking up: The Met Gala on Monday night raised $9 million, which is the most the Gala’s ever raised, and almost twice as much as the $5.4 million raised last year. It’s funny, because though last year’s decorations for the model-themed ball were extravagant, and even included a zebra carpet, this year’s ball wasn’t supposed to look as excessive, though deep down inside it was all along. The results seem incongruous with having Gap as a sponsor. Maybe no one would have cared if Vogue had aligned with an American label that made expensive clothes. We wonder how long their new high-low philosophy will stick around before they go back to just being … high.
