Steven Klein Put the Madonna in Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’

Last night on Larry King Live, Lady Gaga unveiled a preview of “Alejandro,” which she said will be released in full in a few days. We wondered if Steven Klein, who directed the video, would do it justice. Based on the short preview, we would say he has, but the song was also remixed, which helps matters.

Your first thought might be, Why, this is so something Madonna would do! That would make sense, as not only has the song been compared to “La Isla Bonita,” but Klein has also been instrumental in crafting Madonna’s image. Her favorite photographer, Klein shot her recent MDG sunglasses campaign, in which she straddles a hot shirtless boy in a bathroom stall. He also shot the infamous W spread that brought her together with Jesus Luz. As he further proved this year with his Lara Stone editorial in W, Klein has a knack for shooting scenes involving one hot blonde in a crowd of shirtless men. So “Alejandro” feels a little Madonna — so what? At least it has feelings, unlike Rihanna’s video for “Te Amo,” in which she fake fools around with Laetitia Casta, which made us feel nothing but the bad kind of awkward.

We’re more concerned about something else — Gaga’s hair, which is quite the helmet lately. She combed it back à la Larry King to go with her suspenders, but with the shades she refused to remove, she looked more like Karl Lagerfeld to us than like Larry King. In the video, she also wears a slicked-back style and a bowl cut. Maybe all that yellow dye finally disintegrated the ends of her hair.
