Linday Lohan’s lowest moments are also her highest, no pun intended, in the world of fashion. Her 6126 line was a smash hit when it launched as a leggings-only brand with knee-padded styles that could only lead to all kinds of name-calling in the schoolyards of her customers. These did not prevent the former head of Emanuel Ungaro from hiring her to artistically direct the high-fashion line and her critically panned show, which led to massive press — embarrassing for the label, but great for Lindsay. Because in the world of Lindsay, all press is good press; no matter how laughable or absurd it is, it all helps her make more money off her own fashion line. Her 90-day jail sentence stands to be no different, according to expert analyses.
Lindsay’s line, sales of which already total around $3 million a year, stands to greatly benefit from Lohan’s jail time. She’s launching handbags this month, which, if she only has to serve the minimum 23 days of her sentence — a likely possibility — could come out at around the time she gets out of jail. And that could be the hyperpublicized Paris Hilton moment she’s needed all along! WWD spoke to the owner of L.A.’s Kitson boutique, Fraser Ross, who stocks 6126:
“In general, the customer for all these lines is a fan of the celebrity,” Ross said. “If Lindsay’s fans are behind her, they will buy it. She gets the paparazzi, and she’s aware that [being in the public eye] is her livelihood.” His advice? “She should make sure she’s wearing her line when she gets out of jail.”
But Jeff Vansinderen, a senior retail analyst at B. Riley & Co., says Lohan will probably have to do something even more bold, even more calculated than that — be wholesome.
“At the end of the day it may not hurt, and it could even help sales in an ironic and twisted way. It would help if she is successful in her recovery and fans get behind her. Then she could use that to her benefit to promote the line.”
And if that doesn’t work she could just go to jail again.
