scene stealers

Slideshow: The 24 Most Stylish People at the Mad Decent Block Party

One of the greatest advantages to living in New York is ogling the city’s seemingly endless parade of inspired street fashion. Even on nauseatingly hot days, New Yorkers pull out all the stops, creatively layering, piling on the head-turning accessories, and generally causing a sartorial ruckus. Give the kids a reason to dress up, then — some hip, happening, preferably underground-ish event — and it’s all anyone with a hankering for unadulterated, real-deal style could ask for.

To capture the people who make a certain scene, or more to the point, steal said scenes, we’re introducing “Scene Stealers,” a new event-specific style slideshow. First time out the gate, we sent photographer Sam Horine to Saturday’s Mad Decent Block Party at South Street Seaport. The Diesel-sponsored event, now in its third summer running, was a Diplo/Jelly production that saw Maluca, Max Glazer, Bosco Delrey, and other musicians/artists tearing up Pier 17. (The party moves to Los Angeles on August 14 and Chicago on August 21.) The New York gig attracted fashionistas (some of them unintentional) who wore everything from neon-orange pants and high-waisted cutoffs to throwback wayfarers and necklaces made of old cassette tapes. Click ahead to see the 24 most inspiring outfits from the Mad Decent festivities, and to make suggestions on where our lensman should head to next.
