As a menswear designer, Phillip Lim has accomplished the Herculean: He makes leather shorts for guys that are actually cool. They’ve appeared in all of his collections (including today’s runway show), and look like they won’t stick to your thighs. “I think the key is to make it look naïve,” Lim explained backstage after his show. “Like, ‘Yo, I just found it and I think I’m going to put it on.’ When you try too hard with leather it becomes too fierce or sleek.” We think he means too Freddie Mercury. Another unlikely motif that Lim manages to pull off is the sleeveless trench coat. “We always do it,” Lim says. “I love it because it’s deft without the heft. Layering without being so heavy.”
