Despite her budding label’s inclination toward clean lines and minimalist silhouettes, designer Kaelen Farncombe’s spring 2011 collection was inspired by chaos. “I went tornado chasing last year with my two older brothers and my boyfriend,” she says. “I came out of the trip with the most amazing photographs for inspiration.” She’ll show her spring collection — only her second, to date — next Saturday at Drive In Studios.
The Toronto native moved to New York almost four years ago to study at Parsons. Though she snagged jobs at Stella McCartney and Jenny Kane while in school, she decided to launch her eponymous line shortly after graduating last May. She debuted her fall 2010 collection during New York Fashion Week, showing a modern-but-wearable array of layered tanks and asymmetrical knits. “I wanted to leave a lot of room for making the pieces personal,” she explains. The clothes lend themselves to various styling options — closures are hidden, belts are removable, and garments are reversible.
Her fall collection will be sold at Intermix and Thistle & Clover. For spring, expect a continuation of her modern, layer-it-on aesthetic, including textural knits and hand-dyed silks in a palette of nude, peach, and gray. Click ahead to see more from the fall collection.
