First Look: Inside Williamsburg’s Plus-Size Pop-up

After working retail at Lane Bryant for years, Camille Newman had heard countless women complain about the lack of trendy clothing available for plus-size shoppers. Frustrated customers and friends inspired the idea for a plus-size pop-up shop — one geared at those who don’t fit into the confines of sample sizes but still want designer garb. The plan won her a merit award at this year’s Brooklyn Business Plan Initiative, and today she’s launching her pet project: an eleven-day Williamsburg pop-up shop stocked exclusively with sizes in the twelve-to-twenty-four range. The racks are filled with labels that typically top out at size twelve online, including DKNY, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors, as well as a handful of independent designers.

Plus-size designer clothing is hard to get your hands on, Newman discovered. In some cases, it took her up to six months to compile one season’s worth of merchandise, and most items at the pop-up are only available in one size run. Some of the rarer pieces are full-price, while others can be had for 25 to 40 percent off. Stop by tomorrow night for the opening party, when the shop will be offering free mani-pedis to people who spend $45 or more and complimentary cocktails. Click ahead to check out the selection.

Pop-up Plus: Through 9/26. Metropolitan Green, 439 Metropolitan Ave., nr. Marcy Ave.; daily (noon–9).
