Last season at Vera Wang, the mind quickly turned to Snooki when model after model sauntered onto the catwalk with hair piled into deliciously gauzy-looking poufs. The big hair returned this season, but no longer recalled the now poufless Snooki, the bangs of whom no one seems to be copying this season. Wang’s beehives elegantly tipped one way or the other, tucked under here and there, and were a nice complement to her spring collection.
In her show notes, Wang explains that her spring 2011 line was inspired by Kill Bill: “the fusion of East meets West with a mixture of boyish urban sophistication and romantic otherworldly sensuality.” After seeing so much white on the runways, Wang’s show offered a refreshing return to New York’s favorite color — black — though she worked an ivory blouse in here and there. Anna Wintour, sitting next to Serena Williams in the front row, took an extra-hard look at the Japanese floral-printed dresses — perhaps for herself? Wang also showed silk tulle draped dresses in pastel hues, some with tails of fabric trailing off the back. Animals once again came to mind when a few kangaroo-like pouches trickled onto the runway, hanging off the fronts of dresses or the backs of sleeves, where a lady’s escort might secretly hide a cell phone or can of Altoids.
