Michelle Obama Wears Her Own L’Wren Scott in a Harper’s Bazaar Shoot

Though she’s been on the covers of magazines including Vogue, Glamour, Essence, O, Prevention, and Good Housekeeping, Michelle Obama is not on the cover of next month’s Harper’s Bazaar (that honor went to Christina Hendricks). The magazine that hired Tyra Banks to pretend to be Michelle Obama more than two years ago at last got the chance to shoot the FLOTUS in the flesh for an editorial in which Michelle poses with talented young singers and dancers and discusses her initiatives to support the arts. She wears a raspberry L’Wren Scott sheath with bright-blue kitten heals throughout the photo spread; no outfit changes, and all clothes and accessories are her own. We think the photos came out great and awkward-free without distracting from Michelle’s message; in fact, Michelle hardly even discusses fashion in the story, other than to say of her shoes, “you got to get a color pop.” Other clothes pulled for the shoot (some were the performers’ own) included a high-low mix of things like a $168 Ann Taylor dress and $4,115 Missoni number. Watch Harper’s Bazaar editor Laura Brown, future The Fashion Show judge, discuss the story on the Today show here.
