Michelle Obama Wore a Marc Jacobs Dress From the Fall 2010 Runway Collection

Michelle Obama could not have picked a better season to make her first public Marc Jacobs debut. If fall 2010 belonged to any designer, it was Jacobs, with both his namesake and Louis Vuitton collections heralded as a celebration of womanhood and a wonderfully unfussy return to femininity and elegance. Michelle wore a black sequin dress from his fall 2010 line on December 10 to sing with an a cappella group in the White House, seen in a photo recently released on the White House’s Flickr page.

As Mrs. O notes, new Daily Beast staffer Robin Givhan wished just over a year ago for Michelle to wear Marc Jacobs. “He’s probably one of the most directional American designers, so it would be interesting to see if she could incorporate pieces from his collection into her wardrobe and make it something that could work in the White House,” Givhan told Glamour. If she can effortlessly pull of Jean Paul Gaultier and Junya Watanabe, of course she can make an MJ runway dress (one of my favorite looks from New York that season) work! What a great moment in American fashion. Now the U.K. just needs to get Kate Middleton into some Gareth Pugh. Because this is a contest.
