Tsuyumi’s Luxe Winter Hats Meld Warmth and Style

In the face of freezing temperatures and icy rain, warmth often (rightfully) trumps style considerations. Thankfully, Japanese designer Tsuyumi Kumazaki’s eponymous line of thick-knit hats, slouchy wool fedoras, and fur-lined caps blends the best of both worlds. Tsuyumi grew up making hats and clothes for herself and friends. She attended Tokyo Bunka Fashion College — the alma mater of distinguished alums like Yohji Yamamoto and Tsumori Chisato — where she took courses in knitting and millinery. Upon graduating, she launched her collection in 2005, translating her design philosophy (in a word, “garnish,” she says) into funky, functional headwear. Each hat is hand-knit or crocheted, often trimmed with vintage fabric or buttons. She focuses on high-quality materials, including super-wash wool, organic cotton, cashmere, alpaca, and angora; even the simplest beanie styles incorporate chunky yarns for extra warmth. The fall/winter collection is available at Bird, Steven Alan, Catbird, Arth, and more. Click ahead to check out more of her giftable toppers.
