After criticizing Michelle Obama for wearing Alexander McQueen to the state dinner last week, WWD called Oscar de la Renta to talk about it some more:
This is an important issue. Some people did not get the point. It’s not [intended] to be negative. Do you think Kate Middleton is going to be married in Marc Jacobs? Or you’d see Carla Bruni dressing in American clothes? This is a big industry in this country. Mrs. Obama does look great. She should take that and do something. She could do a great good for our industry. We need to create jobs here, create jobs on Seventh Avenue, too.
She’ll probably to wear an American label tonight at the State of the Union (last year she wore Isaac Mizrahi). She’s worn Marc Jacobs twice recently — might she go for him again? Or maybe, just maybe, Mars will invade Jupiter and she’ll wear something from yesterday’s Dior couture show as a big “eff you” to everyone. Oh, we can dream.
