• Michael Kors may have inadvertently started New York Fashion Week. “In the early nineties I had a show in an empty fabulous loft space in midtown New York — it was a very raw space. We were on our fifth look, which was worn by Naomi Campbell and I hear this explosion in the audience. Naomi comes running off the catwalk yelling ‘Oh my God, oh my God the ceiling’s fallen down.’ I said, ‘What do you mean the ceiling’s fallen down?’ She goes, ‘Plaster fell from the ceiling and landed on top of Suzy Menkes and Carrie Donovan.’ Shortly thereafter Suzy wrote a story saying that New York designers were presenting fabulous-looking clothes that were really relevant but how could New York ever hope to be a true fashion capital without an organized venue system?
