Yohji Yamamoto: Turn Off TV, Go Hiking

The program notes for the Y-3 fall/winter collection say it is “inspired by the nature of escape — on horseback, on foot, and into the hills.” The dust on the runway on Sunday was intended to resemble a nature trail, and books such as Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild were references. The message? The clothes are about the journey, not the destination.

Backstage after the show, Yohji Yamamoto elaborated on the theme. “This collection is inspired by a journey; travel all around the world,” the softspoken designer said. “My generation used to be called hippies. Now, young people are backpacking. By walking in the world, young people can see what’s happening, what’s going on.” Fewer young people are exploring the world in this physical way, and he is sorry about it. “Don’t catch all your information from TV, or too quickly,” Yamamoto admonished. “Just walk. Go around.”
