First Look: Images From Yohji Yamamoto’s Latest Retrospective

Thirty years ago, Yohji Yamamoto presented his first collection in Paris. To commemorate the anniversary, Abrams Books and V & A Publishing collaborated on a hefty eponymous book, Yohji Yamamoto, which corresponds with the designer’s first solo exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (March 12 through July 10). The retrospective showcases over 80 garments from throughout Yamamoto’s career.

Inside, exhibition curator Ligaya Salazar asks the designer about his accomplishments thus far. “You are forced to adapt, and every time, every season, the theme of my collection is always against some thing,” Yamamoto says. Click ahead for an exclusive preview of the book, featuring photos by Nick Knight, Craig McDean, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Vinoodh Matadin.
