Another Label That Made Red Soles Before Christian Louboutin Has the Audacity to Come Forward

Christian Louboutin is suing Yves Saint Laurent for trademark infringement after noticing the brand dared to paint the soles of some red pumps red. YSL is fighting back hard, while Valentino’s partner Giancarlo Giammetti sits back and has a chuckle:

Giammetti points out that the now-retired Roman couturier, famous for his red gowns, also designed shoes with red soles way back in 1969 and 1983. In the latter year, Garavani also made soles in rhinestones and in fabrics to match the clothes. Louboutin started using red soles in 1992.

So, can the brand really claim such ownership of a shoe sole color? If any label is famously associated with the color red, and not just in terms of shoes, it’s Valentino.
