Though his show walks this afternoon, Jason Wu made it out to Bergdorf Goodman’s Fashion’s Night Out event last night, where he was autographing the dolls he’d created exclusively for the evening. Wu’s been designing doll clothes since age 10, when his mother bought him his first sewing machine. “I started making clothes for dolls because I didn’t have enough fabric — I didn’t have the resources to make a whole outfit,” he told us. “And that’s how I learned patternmaking. I thought that was a really good tribute to how I came to be in fashion, by doing a miniature version of my design.”
They come decked out in Wu’s 2011 collection and run $150 apiece. Hefty price tag for a toy perhaps, but Wu sees it as a chance to make his designs more accessible. “I feel like there are so many young kids and students coming to Fashion’s Night Out. It’s great to have something that’s affordable for them to take home,” he told us.
