Each season at London Fashion Week, the British Fashion Council awards sponsorship to a crop of promising young designers through its NEWGEN scholarship scheme. This is a big deal for upcoming labels — and not only thanks to the financial assistance, but because many of NEWGEN’s alumni have gone on to make much greater names for themselves both in the British fashion industry and on the international scene. (Previous years’ grantees include Gareth Pugh, Jonathan Saunders, and design duo Clements Ribeiro.)

For fall 2012, a total of fifteen designers will receive the necessary funding to present their collections within NEWGEN’s space during London Fashion Week in February. An additional eight menswear shows are to be funded by the NEWGEN MEN scheme. Six designers will showcase full womenswear runway shows — David Koma, Holly Fulton, Michael van der Ham, J. W. Anderson, Jackie JS Lee, and Simone Rocha (daughter of British designer John Rocha and creator of Lady Gaga’s recent British Elle cover look). J. W. Anderson also received sponsorship for his menswear runway show, as did Christopher Shannon

Sponsorship will also be granted to rising names Christopher Raeburn and Thomas Tait for womenswear presentations and to Matthew Miller, Lou Dalton, and Martine Rose for menswear. Exhibition and installation funding is awarded to designers including buzz-worthy milliner Nasir Mazhar, knitwear label SISTER by SIBLING, Huishan Zhang, and Tim Soar. These shows and presentations — a vital boost and spotlight for young designers — run throughout the full London Fashion Week schedule for fall, representing yet another reason why the overlap between London and Milan’s fashion weeks really should be resolved with as little detriment to London as possible.
