See Tilda Swinton, George Clooney, Rooney Mara, and More at the National Board of Review Awards

Last night, the National Board of Review handed out film awards, thereby preempting all those OTHER award shows — People’s Choice, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, the list goes on, and the gowns seldom get more exciting. The glittery bunch of names that went to the NBR gala in New York included George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Emma Stone, Chloë Moretz, and many more. And you can tell they’re working on getting their red-carpet looks down for this award season because they’re all looking safe as a padded cell. (But if that weren’t the case, why would anyone watch the Grammys?) See some of the starriest stars who attended, wearing (probably borrowed) clothes to the gala in the slideshow.

Emma Stone An upside to this is, if she spills the vanilla custard, no one will know.

Naomi Watts It's hard to look at this and not half-expect a wicked witch to magically appear in the black part, looming over a smoking cauldron, reciting a spell to make everyone who wore black last night look mostly unremarkable. Helen Mirren So this is what that one J.Lo dress would have looked like if it were made of actual fabric. Photo: Stephen Lovekin/2012 Getty Images

Keira Knightley There is something depressing about this look. Like she really wanted to dress for the weather with opaque tights and something that wasn't too short but felt she had to also wear something tight and see-through, because she's an actress, and this is what we expect of famous women nowadays. Jessica Chastain Another close but not-quite-great black gown. Maybe she should have replace the embroidery with sparkles in a "what would Blue Ivy do as an adult" moment? Tilda Swinton I can't say anything bad about Tilda, ever. Not many people would have the balls to go to something like this wearing a purple satin shirt and plum pants, much less make it not look like pajamas or misguided officewear. Carey Mulligan So apparently this beige ombre dress is made of fringe, making it resemble a dirty mop. But — and I wouldn't say this often because it normally works so well but didn't do anyone any favors at this event — at least she didn't wear black. Photo: Michael Loccisano/2012 Getty Images
