Exclusive First Look: Photos From Walter Van Beirendonck’s Retrospective Photobook, Dream the World Awake
Walter Van Beirendonck’s edgy and often explicit body of work gets the retrospective treatment in Dream the World Awake. Accompanying an exhibition by the same name at Antwerp’s Fashion Museum, the new coffee-table book showcases Van Beirendonck’s aesthetic in its entirety, from his eighties breakout Sado line to his recent, zany runway collections — as well as collaborative projects, art pieces, and costumes to which he’s lent his hand. His wide range of inspirations, including technology, art, pop culture, and ethnography, are apparent throughout, as is the sense of (adult) fun that imbues his designs. The book contains shoots by Anton Corbijn, Nick Knight, Jüergen Teller, and David Bailey, and text by renowned fashion writers like Tim Blanks and Valerie Steele.
