A recent study conducted by Cornell University found that consumers were less likely to purchase items listed with “$” because its symbolism triggers the “pain of paying” reflex. Seeing just the number on a price tag leaves you (apparently) blissfully unaware until the point of purchase — when you’re too ashamed to squawk at the cost.
