Stella McCartney tells the BBC that designing the uniforms for the British Olympic team “was like nothing I’ve ever worked on before.” Which goes without saying, since designer clothing usually isn’t even meant to be sweated on, let alone worn while doing somersaults or, say, a heptathlon. McCartney and Adidas unveiled some of the outfits, modeled by muscle-y looking athletes, in London this morning. Overall, the uniforms (or “kit”) will comprise about 175,000 items of clothing and 38 types of footwear for the nearly 500 Olympic and 350 Paralympic competitors. (That’s a lot of Spandex.) See some of the outfits in our slideshow.
