First Looks: Cakelike Dresses and Man-Capris at Chanel’s 2013 Cruise Show
As previously reported, Chanel’s cruise 2013 collection was set in the gardens of Versailles, with models plodding along gravel paths between elaborately pruned topiaries and tinkling fountains in flatform shoes. In keeping with the show’s setting, most of the outfits looked like they were made of expensive, inedible cake. The voluminous white skirts almost looked like fondant, with ruffles in sugary pinks and blues. Models wore pastel-colored wigs tied back with large bows, sort of like what Karl Lagerfeld’s own hairdo would look like if he cut some bangs and stuck his head in Easter egg dye. They also wore pink eye shadow and tiny interlocking Cs beneath their eyes, like teardrop tattoos.
The male models in the show — including Brad Kroenig (sans his son, Hudson, sadly) and Jon Kortajarena — all wore Capri pants and simple tops, like very fancy-looking peasants of some sort. Kortajarena even got to carry a quilted watering can with a golden spout. Others wore matching light denim jackets and pants, Canadian-tuxedo-style (Robert Cavalli, take note!). See a preview of the show’s looks, including Karl taking his final bow in plaid — of all patterns for him to choose, really! — in our slideshow.
