Beauty Tribe: Welcome to Whittemore House Salon, the ‘Hot Girl Factory’

Co-owned by stylists Larry Raspanti and Victoria Hunter, Whittemore House is a hidden gem of a salon tucked away in New York’s West Village. Located in the basement level of an apartment building, you’d never know it exists, even if you walked right past it. But all the boys in the ‘hood know what goes on in the space that’s been decorated to look like the coolest dilapidated mansion (think Miss Havisham meets Brooklyn Flea). Around the corner at a nearby coffee shop, the baristas call Whittemore House the “hot girl factory,” because models like Anja Rubik, Freja Behar Erichssen, and Daria Werbowy are known to stop in for their hand-painted color treatments (pre– and post–Fashion Week). The staff of stylists and colorists also happen to look just as cool. We sent photographer Elizabeth Lippman to capture their perfect roughed-up hair (styled with cult favorite Sachajuan products), tattoos, pin-up lipstick and boys with black nails. Enjoy the slideshow and hear how each member of the salon maintains their beauty regimen (most hardly ever shampoo!).

Charlie Regec, colorist, 24 "I get a lot of Stevie Nicks references to my hair color. It’s just bleach that I’ve painted in myself. I love it because it looks natural, like I’ve been on vacation. I always use Jeveux oil to smooth the ends and then I add in Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist to add volume. My lip color is M.A.C.’s Lady Danger." Photo: Elizabeth Lippman/©07-25-12 by Elizabeth Lippman

For nails, I picked a grassy green color because my friend chose a pink, but I wanted to do something crazy!" Photo: Elizabeth Lippman/©07-25-12 by Elizabeth Lippman

My brows are all natural. I use a little brush to comb them in the mornings after I wake up." Photo: Elizabeth Lippman/©07-25-12 by Elizabeth Lippman

But I happened to go swimming in the ocean a few days ago so I let it air dry, then I just curled the ends with a small barrel curling iron." Photo: Elizabeth Lippman/©07-25-12 by Elizabeth Lippman

Hector Apodaca, cutting apprentice, 25 "My hair is normally short, but I’ve been growing it out for summer for that fun, beach hair. I love having my hair look all wild in the wind. I never shampoo my hair. I like the way it makes it feel dirty. I will just usually put in Jeveux argan oil for some extra shine and then I’ll put in some of Oribe’s Crème for Style to enhance my curls, anything with weight works best for curls." Christina Cipro, colorist, 29, "I always wear red lipstick because it makes me look alive and awake. I’ve been wearing Poppy King’s Red Sinner for the last five years. I love it because it lasts all day. My nails are always Russian Roulette red by Essie. It just looks really ladylike and classic. My hair is bleached but then brightened with Manic Panic’s Virgin Snow." Photo: Elizabeth Lippman/©07-25-12 by Elizabeth Lippman

Carla Naya, color assistant, 28 "My hair is naturally curly, so after I wash it, I’ll put in Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist and mousse when my hair is damp. Then with my fingers I’ll twist sections, all around my head into ropes and I’ll ride the subway into work with my hair like that, so when I get to the salon, all I have to do is shake it out and it’ll look like this." Douglass Cornwall III, apprentice colorist, 25, "Since I’m a colorist, dark dyes always end up staining my nails, so I usually paint them in Chanel Black Satin, but I always use a matte top coat because it give it a leathery kind of look, which I think looks more masculine." Kristen Keller, cutting apprentice, 25 "I’ll style it with a curling iron and then spray on Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist for that beachier look. I don’t really like to wash my hair, so I’ll do that about twice a week because I’m all about the messy look. At night, I’ll just put it up in a loose bun, so in the mornings, I’ll just shake it out and let it go messy. The ends of my hair are bleached, so to treat that and maintain its healthiness, I’ll apply Jeveux argan oil to protect it." Photo: Elizabeth Lippman/©07-25-12 by Elizabeth Lippman

Eugene Park, stylist, 30 "For my skin, I use all of my wife’s stuff from Shiseido. That includes cleanser, a toning mist, and moisturizer. So after I take a shower, I’ll put in a lots of Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist for body and that beachy, texture-y look. Then I blow-dry it from all directions so that it creates movement. Then I’ll put in Oribe’s Rough Luxury to slick it back and on top of that I’ll put in Oribe’s Pomade for some shine, this way, when it falls, it has that James Dean kind of look." Christine Tsvetanov (aka CT), managing director, 45 "I’m a bangs girl and this is actually the shortest they’ve ever been. I love the mod look. When I was younger, I had a boyfriend who used to call me Brigitte Bardot. So I started to wear thick liner in my twenties, but now I try to be a little less severe. Now all I do is get lash extensions from Bling Lash and wear Dior’s lip plumping clear gloss.  I swear by SK-II. I use all of it, all in the order they tell you to." Dimitra Doupi, front desk, 39 "On my lips, I’ll only wear red lipstick. It all started when I was 12 and I’d rouge my lips with cherries, then I moved onto lip gloss, which I didn’t like. Lipstick, I loved right away. Now, no matter what time of day, I’ll have red lips. This is Dior, in Favori Red. It’s the only product I need to have with me if I get stuck on a deserted island." My mother ships me some from Greece, which have liquid inside that you boil. Then I just put them in my hair for ten minutes. I’ll just shake it out after, then come in to work. I finish it with Oribe’s Impermeable spray and Jeveux oil to calm the poodle look." Photo: Elizabeth Lippman/©07-25-12 by Elizabeth Lippman

Angela Soto, stylist, 27 "My beauty philosophy is that I want to look like I did when I woke up. So this just means I apply Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer, YSL mascara, and chapstick. But I do like putting on a Fifties style cat-eye with MAC liquid liner." Photo: Elizabeth Lippman
