New York’s Millennium Hotel was buzzing Saturday morning with big-city dreams, first-day-of-school outfits, and a faint whiff of Marc Jacobs Dot at the seventh annual Teen Vogue University. This year, more than 1600 aspiring style students, ages 16 to 24, applied from across the U.S. and more than twenty other countries to the weekend-long conference. The chosen 500 received lectures direct from fashion’s front-row inhabitants — human institutions like Grace Coddington, Olivier Theyskens, BryanBoy, and Nicole Richie — and a chance to network with the young men and women with whom they may be organizing the Vogue closet someday soon. Two days of seminars offered a glimpse into blogging, buying, social media, styling, creative direction, and, of course, landing the perfect internship, all to prepare the world’s next Alex Whites, Scott Schumans, and Rachel Zoes for promising careers in fashion.
The Cut sent photographer Chuck Grant and reporter Katie Van Syckle to catch up with the Class of 2012 before their first class. They documented the studded collars, tweed suits, leather leggings, and in one case, a DIY calico catsuit complete with matching bow and pink-glittered platforms. These bright young things articulated personal style, outlined ambitions, gushed about style icons, and spoke eloquently of Wang and McQueen. They were also thrilled to be out of Tucson and land in New York, along with suitcases full of clothes that many of them don’t dare try pulling off at home. Click below to see the bold looks they packed in honor of a weekend out of Dodge, along with insight into how the next generation is thinking about style.

Sarah Marie Mitchell, 20, from Tucson, Arizona“This is some stretchy fabric I bought and sewed up and threw on. These are trip shoes I got at Goodwill for four dollars and then I used glue and e6000 craft glue and dumped cheap Michael’s glitter on. My earrings, I just painted with nail polish. And then I made the bow, too. I love Lady Gaga. She isn’t afraid to go out and be herself. That is how I wanted to be, too.”

Sarah Marie Mitchell“I had a couple of girlfriends that were really unique in the way they dressed and when I became friends with them I started picking up that it is okay to dress differently than other girls who are just wearing a Hollister T-shirt and jean shorts." So you befriended the cool girls? "They were cool to me, not cool to a lot of other people. We got a lot of freak show comments in high school.”

Anna Fuller, 20, from Ann Arbor, Michigan “I am in college. But I wouldn’t say I am the typical college student. I spend a lot of my time blogging, assisting on shoots, styling, doing more professional work, rather than tailgating, partying, going out. That’s been different for me. But this is something I am so passionate about, coming to this Teen Vogue event meant so much more to me than being at a football game.”

I also started designing not so long ago and I debuted a line at Virginia Fashion Week just last night. After my debut, I came up here.”

Angeline Cruz, 19, from Los Angeles, California“I love Carol Lim and Humberto Leon from Opening Ceremony and Kenzo. I am obsessed with Kenzo, so they are my idols. My mom was a dressmaker in the Philippines so she would make her own dresses and it just kind of trickled down. She taught me that, although hardships can go on in your life, always look presentable, no matter what.”

Alex Peacher, 21, from Las Cruces, New Mexico “I started a blog last summer and I have noticed so much change just by having that blog. Seeing yourself in pictures, it really makes you realize what you look like to other people, and how people see you and the proportions of your clothes. It has made me want to try things and dress for myself. The Man Repeller has been a really big influence. Of course, it is nice to dress for a guy and look good, but it should be about how you feel.”

Andree-Jade Helie, 23, from Montreal, Canada “I was pretty much starstruck earlier by Grace Coddington. She is just this amazing, incredibly honest person, and I find her work inspiring; it is something I am always looking at when thinking of my work." What is your dream job? "I would say stylist, but if I could do something else in the industry, as long as it is creative, I don’t really mind working hard for it. Because I don’t have a car so you can imagine how hard it is in Montreal.”

Austen Tosone, 18, from Washington Township, New Jersey“This is my second year. I absolutely loved it last year. It launched my whole kind of thing I really want to do in fashion. I am really fascinated by the whole social media part. I have a blog and I find, like, Twitter and Instagram so cool. I would love to be Teen Vogue’s social media manager.”

"Franca Sozzani. She is the editor in chief of Vogue Italia. She is really focused on the democratization of fashion and through Vogue Italia online she allows people from all over the world to write in and file online reports and I find that really interesting. I just think it is necessary for the fashion world to evolve. And especially with all the fast-fashion chains, no matter what price point, no matter how much you have to spend, you can be fashionable.”

Justine Mangum, 20, from Dumfries, Virginia“I would look at magazines and my grandfather was a cutter for Liz Claiborne. He would tell me his stories about being in New York, going to FIT classes." A pattern cutter? "Yeah, a pattern cutter. And that is pretty much how I got into it, magazines." What did he tell you? "He basically said go for it and never think that you are not worthy of this type of job. Just work really hard, and have passion for it. ‘Cause if you don’t have passion, like [Grace Coddington] just said today, there is really no point.”

Adriana Angelini, 20, from Caracas, VenezuelaWhat were you thinking about when you got dressed? “I didn’t want it to feel like I was making this day something special because I feel like fashion is every day you make it special. So it wasn’t a stray away from how I dress every day.”

Eduardo Romo, 22, from Baja, Mexico “When I am in Mexico, they all look at me like, ‘who is this crazy man?’ They laugh at me but I don’t care, I know I am stylish. In Mexico, people are very boring, they are not into fashion. I was doing my suitcase, I was grabbing everything that I would never wear in Mexico. I was like ‘Oh, my God, I get to wear this, and this and this.’”

I love big tutu dresses, and I really like putting together the girly girl Barbie look with my Doc Martens.” Who is your style icon? “I am obsessed with Betsey Johnson, I interned there, and then she went bankrupt.”Photo: Chuck Grant

Bianca Jones-Pearson, 21, from Providence, Rhode Island “I run my own business, called Trashy Bow Couture. I make couture hair accessories out of trash. In Rhode Island, there are a lot of textile mills that have gone out of business. Other companies that sell home furnishings will donate all of their scrap fabric. These are from [my] ‘ugly sweater collection,’ so this is made out of a giant piece of scrap fabric.”

Hailey Beauregard “I love Betsey Johnson and Alexander Wang. Because they just have such a crazy style. Alexander Wang is just so sleek and cool, whereas Betsey Johnson is kind of crazy and out there. I am all over the place. There is a little Wang up top, and then a little Betsey Johnson, too.”

Racquelle Martins, 21, from Providence, Rhode Island“ I am obsessed with print. From cheetah print to floral print, color, I am all about color. So when I bought this top, I was like, ‘what is the way I can wear it. Can I wear it with something plain or should I dress it up with something print?’ So I decided to put the two prints together. Which I love, so [the pieces] can stand out more. And then a plain shoe to complement the pinks in the outfit.”

I didn’t wake up feeling my best today because last night was my homecoming game so I got sick last night." Were you partying hard? "Oh no, I was just nominated on my high school’s court. King. However, I didn’t win. Very exciting, but sad that I didn’t win.”

Aiesha Beasley, 22, from Tucson, Arizona“I love Coco Chanel. I love her, I always look up to her. I think her story is great. How she started out with nothing but worked her way up to the top. I want to be a buyer. Right now, I work at H&M, so it would be awesome to be a buyer [there], to work my way up in the company.”
