Players in Greece’s amateur Voukefalas soccer club are wearing pink practice jerseys this month, but not to raise awareness for breast cancer. It’s the preferred shade of the two brothels now sponsoring the team, Villa Erotica and Soula’s House of History. According to the AP, Greek sports teams are scrambling to find sponsors as businesses fold due to the nearly bankrupt country’s emergency taxes. But prostitution — legal and highly regulated in Greece — is doing better than most and the industry is giving back. “If we don’t help our scientists and athletes, where will we be?” brothel owner Soula Alevridou told the AP. “Greece has educated people, cultured people and good athletes. It’s better to help them than take our money to Switzerland.” The Larissa-based team is not allowed to wear the pink jerseys during games because it is inappropriate for young fans. Not that it bothers the sponsors. “It’s not the kind of business that needs promotion,” Alevridou said. Maybe the Maine Zumba instructor charged with prostitution this month should follow suit, recoup some goodwill in the fitness community.
