Lunchtime Beauty Q&A: How Do I Apply Liquid Lipstick Correctly?

Q: Is liquid lipstick the same as a lip stain, and how do you put it on without making a mess?

A: Liquid lipstick is a genius combo of stain, gloss, and lipstick. It has the staying power and intense pigment of a stain (minus the scary prospect of splattering all over your clothes) with the easy-wand application of a gloss, and the look and feel of the creamiest lipstick ever. No wonder it’s having something of a boom, with brands like Guerlain, Shiseido, Revlon, and Stila all making their versions. “It lasts longer than any lip stain and yet it’s very moisturizing, says makeup artist Jorjee Douglass, who layered Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Ballet (a pink shade) over Raven (a true red) on Zooey Deschanel’s lips for the Emmys. “I wanted her lips to last through the red carpet and the entire ceremony with no touch-ups, and it did!” She applies liquid lipstick on bare, moisturized (but not slickly balmed) lips. “Do two layers for an opaque, matte look, or put on one coat and then blot it to create a sheer, stained, bitten-lip effect.”
