Did you hear about slut-dropping? According to the Independent, it’s the British male college student practice of driving to a nightclub early in the morning, offering a single woman a ride home, driving as fast as he can in the opposite direction of her destination, throwing her out of the car, and taking a picture. It is apparently, to our horror, all the rage. But according to the Guardian, long before slut-dropping was a bad thing, slut-dropping was a dance move with its origins in “music videos inspired by pole-dancing.”

The Guardian reports:

The real slutdrop is a move that, to get technical for a moment, is not dissimilar to Legally Blonde’s “bend and snap”. You fling one hand in the air to steady yourself while you squat, straight-backed. Despite inevitable anterior cruciate ligament injuries, go down as low as is possible, then pop back up immediately. If you’re wary of tearing your trousers, hoik them up, Harold Bishop-style. (If you don’t you may pay the price; one friend has unseated six pairs of trews). Oh, and keep your ankles together.

It’s an excellent workout, and, if the Guardian is to be believed, “a true signifier of feminine camaraderie” and “one of the few examples of the word [slut] being reclaimed by women.” “By stealing the name for such a nasty, abhorrent practice, those Unilads have reminded us once again of the word’s pejorative sting,” Sophie Wilkinson writes.

I’m not sure I buy it, but if U.K. women are looking to re-reclaim “slut-dropping” from the frat boys and need something else to call driving women to remote locations against their will, they could always go with “second-degree kidnapping.”
