Street Style: Happy Father’s Day in Brooklyn

What did you do for your father yesterday? Did you shower him with chocolate golf balls? Gab about Mad Men and feel better about yourselves? Spoil him with a neck lift? Perhaps you had your mom pick up colorful button-downs that coordinated perfectly with the tie she bought and said was from you and your brother. Or maybe, like the many fathers we found this weekend at Brooklyn Bridge Park, you hung out on some grass and just enjoyed being together, eating pie for breakfast or logging QT in pirate-ship sandboxes. Dads aren’t often appreciated for their style, but we did manage to track down a few of the thoughtful, stylish, hardworking guys out and about yesterday, plus loads of adorable kids.

Tim Glenister, 39; Lily, 3 1/2 What has having a daughter taught you? It’s definitely taught me to appreciate a bit more of what moms go through, but it’s taught me primarily, to, just to think about girls and women and moms differently. Little girls are the best. She’s owned me since day one. And I know I’m in trouble for the rest of my life. Photo: Bek Andersen

Michael Schneider, 38; Lewis Schneider, 8; Ivy Schneider, 4; Min O-Schneider, 37 What do you feel like your kids have taught you? Michael: I think probably the best thing about having kids is just always being flexible. We had kids relatively young, compared to a lot of our friends, and it’s been good because we are all growing together, so they are more friends than typical children. Photo: Bek Andersen

Anthony Burgess, 57; Denise Burgess, 53; DiJon Burgess, 31 What have you learned form your dad? DiJon: What it means to be a responsible, respectful, and just like the image of a man, and what a man should be. I think he exemplifies that. Leads with his heart. So come Father’s Day, do you drop everything and make sure you’re available? DiJon: Of course. It’s all about him, what he wants me to do. If he wants me to walk on the moon with him today, I’m walking on the moon. Photo: Bek Andersen

Troy Chakarun, 37, and Caleigh, 11, from San Francisco What brought you to New York? We are here to celebrate Father's Day and for Caleigh's first NYC experience. We did the Half Circle Line, saw the Statue of Liberty, the bridges, the carousel, Intrepid. Had pizza, of course, at one of the Original Infamous Ray's, then scooted over to Empire State and of course topped off the afternoon with Dylan's Candy Bar and then hit Cafe Luxembourg, Matilda the Musical, and a quick photo stop at Times Square before hitting bed. Patrick Gleason, 24, San Francisco; and Tony Gleason, 66, Newport Beach, CA. Do you come to New York often for family holidays? Tony: No, the last time I came to New York was in 1966. Whoa! Patrick: I just flew out. He didn’t even know I was going to be here. So it was a little surprise, my mom and I worked it out, we arranged the plane flight. Because I live in San Francisco, so he was just coming out to visit my sister. And then I was just in her in apartment when he showed up. Tony: I had no idea. Patrick: This guy was stunned. What are you going to do today? Patrick: We’re going to get some waffles and fried chicken and pies because my dad has an obsession with pies. Photo: Bek Andersen

Elvis Jimenez, 35; Hilma Jimenez, 35; Sophia Jimenez, 6; from the Bronx Have things changed for you by having a daughter? Elvis: Oh yeah, I think about things three times, four times, ten times. Like what? Staying out of trouble. Photo: Bek Andersen

Gavin Jones, 31, and Max Jones, 67 What have you learned from each other over the years? Gavin: It’s more or less everything. He gave me enough space to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes and I think that really allows a kid to grow and develop on their own, but it was always with the sense that he was back there, and he was there for guidance and everything if I needed it. He wasn’t over-smothering or anything. And I made a lot of mistakes. Photo: Bek Andersen

Corey Roberts, 38, and Sophie Roberts, 9.5 months; from Park Slope How are you celebrating your first Father’s Day? Well we celebrated it by burning our first Eggo waffles for the day, we burned those but then it progressed pretty nicely, we walked down here. We had a lobster roll and then we went on the carousel. What’s the most surprising thing about being a father? Probably the amount of work it is. I guess it shouldn’t have been that surprising, but it’s tiring. Photo: Bek Andersen

Ralph Falack, 34; Renee Falack, 32; Bobbie, 7; Ruby, 4; Joseph 2; from Bensonhurst How did the day start? Breakfast in bed, coffee in bed, cards, presents, and now we’re here. Did they all bring you breakfast in bed? They all participated, I had quinoa with poached eggs and kale, and my coffee. What do you feel like you’ve learned from each other? That it’s all about family. Photo: Bek Andersen

Shahn: How is that a present for me? Shinéad: Because you can see it’s so blue. What would you say you’ve learned from these guys? Patience. Responsibility. I never put any relationship in my life in front of myself until I had kids, any woman I’d ever dated, any relationship I’d ever had, anything. I was always a selfish bastard, until I had kids that I learned to put someone else in front of me, because they need it. Photo: Bek Andersen

Simon Blair, 37; Hester Blair, 35; Poppy, 6; Ava, 4; from Scotland and Ireland, now living on the Upper West Side Is father’s day any different in Scotland or Ireland? No it’s about the same. It always starts off with breakfast in bed. And then we get presents from the kids and we do something special. What have you learned from your daughters over the years? I like looking at life through their eyes and relearning things as they learn them. Do you ever feel like you’re winging it? Constantly. That’s all we’re doing. There’s books, but they don’t tell you. And I think if you’re too fixed in your thinking, things will start to go wrong. Photo: Bek Andersen

Ross Alvord, 41; Nuala, 9; from Brewster, New York Have you done anything special for your dad today? Nuala: Well this morning, we took all our presents and we put them on the table for him and then he opened them up. At school I made him like a card and it said certificate to the best dad ever, and there was kind of like a poem, D-A-D-D-Y sideways, and then we had to think of words that could describe my dad with the letters that were in them. What makes him the best dad ever? I think because, there are so many things, he’s so nice, he takes care of me, I love reading with my dad a lot. In the car we were making up all kinds of stories and we were cracking up. Photo: Bek Andersen

For the past three or four years I lived on my own, so it’s nice to be back at home and see my parents, and spend some time with them. Has your relationship changed? Yeah. Stephen: He’s a lot mellower now. Jordan: They are a lot more laid back than they used to be with me living in the house, I used to drive them crazy, so they’re both a lot more relaxed now. Definitely a better situation. Photo: Bek Andersen

Zelie Goldberg-Little, 9; Kestrel Goldberg-Little, 5; Jason Little, 43; Myla Goldberg, 41; Myla's father Mark, 67 Do you have any father’s day traditions? Kestral: I get bored in the mornings, so I need something to do, and since it was Father’s Day I wanted to be nice to Daddy and put a banana on his bedside table. Does your dad like bananas? Kestral: Yes. Photo: Bek Andersen

Sandra Darwish, 44; Jamie Darwish, 36; Hannah, 18 months Have you celebrated Father’s Day in any particular way? Sandra: Well this is his second Father’s Day so we are trying to make a tradition of coming down to the park. That’s what we did last year. Do you look at life differently since having a daughter? Sandra: I work nights. So he totally has her, all night long. Jamie: And that’s been since she was young. How has that changed your relationship? Jamie: There’s a strong bond, that was created at a young age with her because of that. But the attachment she has to me is really strong, because for her first year, I was around a lot. Sandra: He comes through the door and she stops what she’s doing and does like this little dance, and she spins around and then he gets like this whole welcome. Photo: Bek Andersen

Dan Wooten, 70, Lexington, Kentucky; David Wooten, Dumbo, Brooklyn; Daniel Wooten III, Atlanta, Georgia; Bradley Wooten, 7; Jacob Wooten, 4 You are from Atlanta? Bradley: Yeah, but I’m a big Nets fan. One of my teammates used to play for the Hawks and then he went to the Nets, and when he moved to the Nets then I had to go for the Nets. Joe Johnson. Have you gotten to see the Nets since you’ve been in Brooklyn? No. But I went to the Nets stadium. What did you think? It was cool and also there was a shop across the street that we went to get my hat. Did you get into basketball through your dad? Yeah, but he’s a Hawks fan. Photo: Bek Andersen
