During a MacGyver-like turn in 2008, Dutch craftsman Dirk Vander Kooij found an old robot, reprogrammed it to act as a 3-D printer, and fed it recycled refrigerator plastic. Dozens of prototypes later, the result is this sculptural Pulse chair, which just landed in the U.S. ($1,293 at Cite, 32 Greene St., nr. Grand St.; 212-431-7272). The robot (nicknamed Herman) produces each 32-inch-tall model in less than four hours, complete with a sturdy butterfly base and a unique gradient effect that varies with every chair.
