Is Wearable Technology Actually Fashionable?

It’s been one year since Diane Von Furstenberg sent Google Glass down the runway. Since then, they’ve been featured in Vogue, worn by multiple fashion editors, and plugged by the Times’ Styles section. Meanwhile, Samsung just released a smartwatch, and apparently Jawbone is sending sleep- and calorie-tracking wristbands to editors and buyers. (Says Vanity Fair’s Punch Hutton: “I don’t want to know.”) This Fashion Week, the Cut wonders whether wearable gadgets will ever be acceptable — or even covetable — accessories, in the realm of Prada peeptoes or a Cartier bracelet.

Responses from fashion show attendees were mixed: Vogue’s Hamish Bowles proposed that a teal ostrich band, similar to the one on his own Boucheron, would greatly improve his chances of wearing a smartwatch, while T’s Deborah Needleman noted the sorry aesthetic of Google glass. “They could not be uglier,” she said. “It’s like, the worst kind of German architect nerd glasses.” We agree, but it didn’t stop Marie Claire’s intrepid Nina Garcia from wearing them all week.
