Best Bet: JoAnn Berman’s Chrome Chair

Decades before there were #localdesigners, there was JoAnn Berman: a Bronx native who rose to prominence making up-cycled clothing for Patricia Field, custom jail-striped suits for the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, and now screen-printed furniture like this repurposed fifties chrome chair ($3,200), which just arrived on the new home-décor floor of vintage shop Collette (1298 Madison Ave., nr. 92nd St.; 212-348-9800). Berman hand-screened the leather upholstery with layer upon layer of rich colors and graphics. “I go into my trance mode,” she explains of the process, “and I don’t always know where it will end. But on this piece, when I finally laid down the red, it was like the artist Georges Braque was whispering in my ear.”
