Marvel Comics Launches a Comic Starring a Muslim Superheroine

In its ongoing effort to increase diversity in its series, Marvel Comics plans to introduce lead character Kamala Khan, a Muslim teenager living in Jersey City who discovers a plethora of powers, including shape-shifting. The series writer, G. Willow Wilson, told the New York Times that Khan’s story will be “about the universal experience of all American teenagers, feeling kind of isolated and finding what they are.”

Next year, Marvel is introducing two more series with female leads at the center: Elektra and She-Hulk.
