What. A. Year. 2013 brought Cara Delevingne and her brows into an ever fuller supremacy, Marc Jacobs’ grand finale at Louis Vuitton, and LululemonGate. It was a year of fat-shamed pregnancies, candid talk about the lack of diversity on the runways, and one in which full bush, in all its glory, made a comeback of sorts. From Galliano’s nascent re-entry to the industry to the debut of “side-butt” on the red carpet, click through our slideshow to see the biggest fashion moments of the year.

Oscar de la Renta and John Galliano Formed a Cozy Alliance In January, it was announced that John Galliano would take up residency with Oscar de la Renta and provide input on his fall 2013 collection. While it's unclear how much Galliano actually contributed, rumors suggested that Galliano was being considered for a permant position there. As of last week, reports again surfaced that de la Renta and Galliano are still e-mailing weekly – which is a euphemism for he’s still being considered for the job.   Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/2013 Getty Images

It Was the Year of the Birkenstock! Phoebe Philo, we thank you. 2013 will be forever remembered as the year that Birkenstocks came back: They saved our arches, invaded Fashion Week, and found new meaning in the form of Céline’s Furkenstocks. Alexander Wang Got Really Positive Reviews for His Balenciaga Collections Alexander Wang has had a big, big year: It began last February, with his first collection for Balenciaga, filled with blacks and whites and marble prints and safety-pin embellishments. The collection was, of course, well-received, with Cathy Horyn calling it “impressive” and the London Times hailing Wang’s “brave new future.” Since then, Wang has been on a roll – racking up several wins. Lululemon Sheer-Gate Anyone who has ever been to a yoga class knows the truth: Old yoga pants stretch out to the point where you canvery clearly see people’s butts during down-dog. But Lululemon, purveyor of allegedly opaque yoga pants, fell down the rabbit hole when it announced last spring that it would recall some of its pants on account of sheerness. The company reportedly lost $20 million, went into a PR tailspin – and, one doofish, fat-shaming comment later –  the founder resigned. A big year! Photo: Joe Raedle/2013 Getty Images

Marc Jacobs Left Louis Vuitton ... and Then Announced IPO Marc Jacobs’ announcement in October that he would leave Louis Vuitton after sixteen years took many as a surprise — and culminated in a dazzling final show — but was well-timed with the announcement of his IPO for the Marc Jacobs brand, which will reportedly happen in the next three years. Well played, Marc, well played. Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/2013 Getty Images

Nicolas Ghesquière Left Balenciaga … and Then Got Hired by Louis Vuitton When Nicolas Ghesquiere announced his departure from Balenciaga, people were understandably devastated. He then went under the radar and gave a loose-lipped interview about his time there, which he probably now deeply regrets. Then, in November, it was announced that he would succeed Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton. As New York’s Amy Larocca put it, the news was “very, very, very good.” Photo: Giovanni Giannoni/© Corbis. Designers Were (Finally) Held Accountable for Their Lack of Diversity It's about time: This year finally brought a frank and honest conversation about the lack of diversity on the runways. It began in September when Naomi Campbell, Iman, and BethAnn Hardison penned a letter and appeared on Good Morning America to call out designers whose recent catwalks showed a glaring lack of non-white models. As the letter, which was originally posted on the Balance Diversity website, read: “Eyes are on an industry that season after season watches fashion design houses consistently use … one or no models of color. No matter the intention, the result is racism."

Rick Owens Brought a Step Team to His Runway For his spring 2014 presentation, Rick Owens made a strong statement by bringing an American step team onto the runway to model the clothes and perform. It was a powerful show — that sent a loud message about the lack of racial and body diversity on the runway. As the Cut's Robin Givhan put it, "The clothes made an impact, yet they were not the stars of the show. But sometimes, they really don't have to be." Photo: MIGUEL MEDINA/2013 AFP

Public Prengnacies Brought Out the Worst in People Kim Kardashian's (now most Googled) pregnancy was one defined by people loudly fat-shaming her and the team at the Cut uncomfortable-shaming her. Miley’s Year of the Twerk When Miley Cyrus took to the stage at the MTV VMAs flailing her tongue wildly, rubbing that foam finger against her body, humping giant teddy bears, and twerking on a Beetlejuice-suited Robin Thicke, another squeaky-clean former Disney angel had her wings clipped. And while her newfound oneness with "ratchet" culture initially had critics crying Minstrel Show or diving into think pieces about "Miley just being Miley," Cyrus rose out of the media turmoil as a winner. By September, the Internet began touting Miley as a marketing genius. She was almost even crowned Time's Person of the Year, but Pope Francis won the title instead. Street-Style Died (and Then Came Back to Life) Just when we thought fashion-week peacocking could go no further, Suzy Menkes published an article bitterly bemoaning the circus of it all. She may have had a point, but come on. Bloggers (and street-style subjects) like Natalie Joos and Leandra Medine published impassioned defenses of their sport, and the Cut’s Robin Givhan came to their defense, the over-accessorized few: “These folks are not aiming to shock their audience,” she wrote. “They don’t want people to flee. They want them to slow down, to pause and to admire. It is comforting that fashion can still make an anonymous man or woman the center of attention, if only for a moment.” Photo: Andrew H. Prada Cast Its First Black Model Since Naomi Campbell In July, Prada announced 19-year-old British model Malaika Firth as the face of its fall/winter 2013 campaign. Firth, who was born in Kenya and raised in the U.K., became the second black model in Prada’s history to star in the brand’s campaign. Naomi Campell was the first, and she modeled for Prada in 1994, nineteen years ago (or the number of years Firth was alive). Firth was touted as “the new Naomi Campbell” — and the delicate and ongoing conversation of race in fashion became harshly exposed in the spotlight.

Condé Nast Said "No More Interns" The death knell of the Condé Nast internship program finally rang in October, permanently shattering the dreams of glossy-eyed, fashion-loving college students everywhere. The decision to end the program in 2014 followed the heels of lawsuits against Condé Nast from two former interns at W and The New Yorker. Photo: New York Daily News Archive/2003/Daily News, L.P. Two Members of the Missoni Family Died The Missoni family suffered a 2013 that was marred with unfortunate moments, beginning with a disappearance of a small plane carrying Vittorio Missoni and his family in January to the death of Ottavio Missoni, the family’s patriarch, in May. The man behind the bold, iconic zigzag prints died peacefully in his home in Sumirago, Italy, at the age of 92. Photo: Pier Marco Tacca/2013 Pier Marco Tacca

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez Won the CFDA Again The beautiful boys behind Proenza Schouler once again found themselves safely nestled against the fashion world’s bosom. The duo, who impressed Anna Wintour and took home the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award in 2004, was annointed the title of Womenswear Designer of the Year nine years later. Collection The collaboration that had been in the works for two years finally landed in July. The goods on sale: hooded sweatshirts, plain white tees, and “Kanye Jeans.” The T-shirts, alone cost $120 — and from an interview with A.P.C.'s founder, Jean Touitou, it appears that working with Yeezus was far from a cakewalk, no matter how minimal the products.

The Crowning of Public School  The fashion world’s darling of 2013 was none other than menswear brand Public School. The brains behind the New York-based brand, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne (both Sean John alums), took home the 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize of $300,000 in November and the Swarovski Menswear Award at the CFDAs in June. Vagina Pride on Streetwear Was a Thing Inexplicably, and certainly against the will of several fashion houses, 2013 brought an assortment of vagina pride on streetwear. From “Cuntier” hats to boob T-shirts, there was a lot of it. We blame it on you, Cara Delevingne.

Punk, a.k.a. the Year Everybody Looked Bad at the Met Gala When Anna Wintour decrees a theme party, you better come dressed accordingly. But when people came dressed for the Met Gala in honor of the Costume Institute’s PUNK: From Chaos to Couture in May, one thing was clear: people really didn’t understand what punk actually meant. The only person who was saved from the jaws of the punk clutches? Why, Wintour herself, who simply doesn’t look good with a mohawk. Photo: Andrew H. Walker/2013 Getty Images

Barneys Was the Subject of a Major Racial-Profiling Controversy It wasn't Barneys' best year. After two separate customers made allegations of racial profiling against the store, Jay Z was pressured to call off his collaboration, executives desparately tried to make amends, and Bryant Gumbel made a race joke about it. A Labor Law Was Passed to Ban Use of Underage Models To the dismay of runway model casters everywhere, but the utmost benefit of young girls entering the industry, the underage-model bill was successfully signed into law in October. Sara Ziff, founder of the Model Alliance, proposed a bill that would protect models younger than 18 under the same child-labor laws applied to dancers, actors, and performers — and even allowed industry vets, like Coco Rocha, to expose their own harrowing tales from working as underage models.

Angela Ahrendts Left Burberry for Apple In October, when Angela Ahrendts announced her move from CEO of Burberry to senior vice president of retail and online stores at Apple, it was one more sign that the tech and fashion worlds were melding together into one happy, luxe family. Tech products are the new luxury goods. At the very least, Ahrendts unexpected departure from Burberry proved that Apple had fixed its hawk eyes on fashion CEOs. Before Ahrendts’s departure from Burberry, former YSL CEO Paul Deneve was poached to work on “special projects” for Tim Cook in July. To fill in Ahrendts's void, Burberry’s chief creative officer, Christopher Bailey, stepped up to take on both roles.   Photo: Peter Foley/Bloomberg via Getty Images

Kate Moss Posed for the Cover of Playboy The first batch of rumors that Kate Moss would be posing for Playboy’s 60th anniversary issue hit the Internet in March – and like the best pieces of juicy gossip, ended up being completely true. In December, the special issue featuring the supermodel wearing bunny ears, French cuffs, a bunny tail, and stilettos hit newsstands. Inside the magazine, the 39-year-old Moss appeared in various stages of undress, almost always with bunny ears perched atop her head.   Photo: Mert Marcus for Playboy

Eva Chen Became the Editor of Lucky During Anna Wintour's Total Conde Overhaul After Anna Wintour’s appointment as Condé Nast’s “artistic director,” a bloodbath (of sorts) ensued. But in the midst of the pandemonium of older, more assumed-to-be secure editors getting the axe, Wintour found a youthful champion (dare we say, successor?) in the social media-adoring Eva Chen, who is in her early thirties, in June. Chen, the former beauty and health director at Teen Vogue, was initially hired (under Wintour’s recommendation) as a consultant for “special projects” at Lucky in April. In June, she was appointed as Lucky’s editor-in-chief, succeeding Brandon Holley, who was allegedly leaving the company. Chen is the first Asian-American editor-in-chief of a Condé Nast title. Kanye Had So Many Things to Say About Fashion Kanye ranted about so many things this year, it was too hard to keep track. One noteable exception: He accused Nike of pedaling "trash-ass" shoes, and promptly severed his contract to sign an alleged $10 million deal with rival Adidas. Uncharacteristically, he admitted to doing it for the money. Photo: Clint Brewer / Splash News/© www.splashnews.com

Gina Gershon Played the Campiest Donatella Versace Ever Gina Gershon made fashion-Lifetime history in October by donning skin-tight dresses, donning a long, platinum hairdo, and dropping her voice an octave to play Donatella Versace in House of Versace. While Gershon as Donatella was delightfully campy, Versace, unfortunately, did not approve of the biopic— and didn’t even lend the house’s clothes to the filmmakers.
