Nothing that happened on the Golden Globes red carpet topped the squirrelly awkwardness of the show itself — from Jacqueline Bisset’s surrealist, meandering acceptance speech to Diane Keaton’s musical number to Ben Affleck’s moist mumbling — but fortunately it was not totally without excitement: What was Zoe Saldana thinking? Whither went Amy Adams’s disappearing cape? What crime did Julia Roberts’s upper body commit to warrant such treatment? And will Lupita Nyong’o ever not take our breath away? Join us as we highlight the fifteen most noteworthy looks from the red carpet.

Best Second Act We could be referring to the Amy Poehler–Tina Fey monologue, which was as funny and charming as the first time they hosted, but we're actually talking about their outfits. We thought they looked lovely on the red carpet, but then they came out for the show looking foxier than a compromised henhouse. May this shark never jump. Photo: Jeff Vespa/WireImage/2014 Handout

Weirdest Backside We're not referring to Emma Watson's personal assets, obviously. Surely her bum is flawless. But her orange Dior dress, intriguing from the front, turned out not to be a dress at all but rather a high-fashion hospital gown. Funky idea, but walking around all night feeling a draft is the stuff of which anxiety dreams are made. Photo: Steve Granitz/2014 Steve Granitz

Best Dress That Never Showed Up on TV The divine Lizzy Caplan looks awesome in this unusual Pucci deco number, and yet she received no on-camera love (that we saw) all night. Fortunately, she gets so much of that on Masters of Sex that she's probably feeling appreciated enough already. Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images

Most Questionable Color Scheme We love how much Sandra Bullock has spun the color wheel lately, but this looks like the decor at a baby shower where nobody knows the kid's gender yet and they're kind of annoyed about it. Best Built-in Cape On a night where there were, unbelievably, two capes, Lupita Nyong'o charmed us with an orange off-the-shoulder Ralph Lauren with attached drama. There was discussion about whether it was too evocative of Gwyneth Paltrow's white Tom Ford version from the 2012 Oscars, but Lupita's look is just different and vibrant enough that we think it's a glorious addition to the conversation, rather than a mere homage. Best Detachable Cape Winner Amy Adams was flawlessly styled and wrangled all night, except that they whisked this sucker off her shoulders before anybody got a head-to-toe photo of her in it (do we smell a cape rivalry? Can we invent one?). We're not really complaining, because the Valentino under it recalled her sexy American Hustle wardrobe in a stunning, elegant, modern way. But she should wear that throw again. And again. And if not, we'd be thrilled to help her wear it into the ground. Photo: Alberto Rodriguez/NBC/2014 Alberto Rodriguez/NBC

Nicest Surprise: Julianna Margulies Julianna Margulies has a tendency to show up at these things wearing something aggressively structured and occasionally weird, so it's a treat to see her working such a classically pretty — and seasonally appropriate — Andrew Gn frock. It's a good reminder that, sometimes, you don't need to reinvent the wheel. Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images

Best Unsung Newbie We've all been so in love with Lupita Nyong'o that Margot Robbie hasn't gotten enough credit for making cool choices in service of The Wolf of Wall Street. This Gucci sheath is clean and pretty with the right amount of sparkle — althoug,h frankly, we're also just relieved she left her Cheetos-colored tan on the movie set. Best Callback The minute Reese Witherspoon hit the red carpet in this sassy coif, we remembered the year she whipped out her Divorce Bangs in a canary Nina Ricci cocktail dress. And this Calvin Klein is equally successful: sassy, sleek, and a color that's a welcome smack to the forehead, like drinking coffee after a month off caffeine. Not that we would ever try something so crazy. Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images

On the E! red carpet show, she told Giuliana that Prabal Gurung made this dress specifically for her, and told her she was the only one who could wear it.  We like to think that was code for, "I felt terrible telling him no, even though this thing looks like I fell head-first into the remnant pile." On the other hand, it is heart-warming to know that Prabal has such an outsize amount of confidence in his friend's fashionable élan. Yeah, let's go with that. Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images

Biggest WTF Seriously, what is even happening here? Paula Patton's Stephane Rolland gown looks like she decided she needed to bring her duvet with her, in case she wanted to take a nap during the boring middle section of the Globes. Just make your team carry it if it won't fit in your purse, kid. Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images

Most Decoupaged Well, if someone held a gun to your head and asked you to name the celebrity who would show up at the Golden Globes dressed like a Valentine, you would say Drew Barrymore, wouldn't you? She looks like a scrapbook come to life. Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images

Best Use of Star Power Everyone at home who happened to be watching E! heard Cate Blanchett tell Leonardo DiCaprio that she hated every minute of the red carpet. Luckily, the red carpet loves her: Only she could take an Armani Prive funeral doily and make it worthy of a conversation. She's helped along by the fact that her dress is prim and proper in the front, but surprisingly sexy from the back. Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images

Most Judicious Use of the Sheer We generally are over the endless sheer trend, but this divinely detailed J Mendel is spectacular on Elisabeth Moss. Is there anything more satisfying than when an actress nails her look on the same night she takes home a big prize? Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images

Most Unexpectedly Business Casual Julia Roberts's unholy Dolce & Gabbana dress-shirt combo makes her look as if she got cold feet about wearing a strapless frock at the last minute and made do with her hairstylist's top. That can't be what actually happened … can it? Because if it did, someone's getting fired. Photo: Jason Merritt/2014 Getty Images
