Dating apps like Tinder really oversell their convenience, because at the end of the day, in order to make that true love connection, you still have to get off the couch, put on pants, and go meet someone in person. USA Today reports on the next big dating-app trend to avoid intimacy and shared airspace: the Video Chat date.

When the Cut first heard about one such app, Charm, the first impression was: Why would anybody ever want to video date? But regular online dating has proven to require too much financial, intellectual, and emotional commitment — giving way to a flurry of video-dating apps like Dating.Fm, Flikdate, Video Date, View n Me, and Instamour, which offer real-time dating without much real-life effort. All you need is one minute, one smartphone, decent lighting, and the acknowledgement that you’re probably one “what are you wearing” away from a bad idea.
