Editor’s Picks: The Top 5 Looks at Fashion Week, Day 3

The third day of Fashion Week brought us more oversize coats (in candy colors and super-fuzzy shearlings) and lots of dramatic eveningwear. Among our favorite looks were radiantly draped gowns at Prabal Gurung and hyper, technicolor dreamboat furs at Altuzarra. Clearly, coverage and comfort are meaningful themes already this season.  Here, our favorite looks from today.

At Jill Stuart, a big, cozy black coat (continuing the cocoon-coat conversation) was worn over a gray sweater midi-dress, a popular length carried over from the spring 2014 shows that has definite staying power. It was chic and comfortable-looking, too.

Prabal Gurung showed off his skills with eveningwear, sending out a number of draped jersey and chiffon dresses, some with cutouts, some with crystal embroidery, each its own special offering for the awards season. A crimson, long-sleeve gown embroidered with Swarovski crystals, with a cool turtleneck (high necks are feeling a trend for New York already), exuded a confident sexiness. With a small cutout on the side, it was a great example of red-carpet sex appeal without the typical skin show.

Street-style favorite Ostwald Hegalson wove fruit motifs throughout a shiny, sporty fall collection. A sweatshirt-like top featuring a graphic banana was paired with an asymmetric printed skirt.  The shape of the skirt gave a peel-like effect, and the banana tops reminded us of dressed-up Velvet Underground concert tees.

In Altuzarra’s lineup full of luxe crepe dresses and handwoven tapestry pieces, this brightly colored “madras plaid” fur (one of two sent down the runway) was a jolt of excitement on a cold winter day. We can’t wait to see these in next season’s editorials.

At Alexander Wang, a futuristic finale of color-changing (seemingly by heat transference) stood. But before this spectacle, a more wearable, even prettier look walked: a dark, ruby-red astrakhan fur top paired with super baggy wide-leg pants. It was a great way to marry downtown sport with luxury fabrics in a single look.
