Birth Control Hits the Supreme Court Next Week

Arguments begin in front of the Supreme Court on Tuesday in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby, the privately held craft store that’s suing for a religious exemption from Obamacare’s mandate to cover Plan B without a co-pay. (They think Plan B is an abortion pill; it’s not.) The legal implications of a win — which would give a corporation constitutionally protected freedom of religious expression for the first time — are being debated just about everywhere. This Planned Parenthood animation calculates the financial effect it would have on women and families — $600 a year for some 47 million women. Even worse, ThinkProgress reports the change would also let employers shirk coverage on doctors’ appointments where contraception like IUDs are discussed, let alone the IUD itself.
