Peter Pilotto for Target, Isabel Marant for H&M — capsule collections and diffusion lines are taken for granted in the fashion world. But what would a diffusion line for art look like? That’s the question posed by the art collective DIS with “DISown-Not For Everyone,” which they describe as an “exhibition posing as a retail store.” The collective asked more than 30 artists — including Ryan Trecartin, Simon Fujiwara, K-HOLE, and Hood by Air — to create pieces for the show at Red Bull Studios in Chelsea, where they’ll be on sale through April 6. (Prices will range from $50 to $500, “with exceptions.”)

"Doing an internship is kind of similar to when you go to a formal dinner and you’re given the last-minute folding chair to sit on. It’s a position that can be very easily cracked and it’s not very stable or permanent. And it’s also lightweight. And also it’s very uncomfortable." Photo: Eric T. White

"I wanted to make a beanbag because I think it is a comfortable and easy and kind of democratic way of sitting ... It can be for one person who likes a lot of space or it can be for several people who like to share."

"It’s a koozie, basically, for a potted plant — an actual beanie embroidered with different whistleblowers’ names on them.
The plant comes with the beanie. The plants are all ecofriendly, Whole Foods brand, fair-trade, probably, house plants. Kind of pointing out this absurdity within the politics of liberalism ... how you can express your politics through consumptive goods in a passive way, just like shopping." Photo: Eric T. White

"Diplomacy is a formula. It’s a formula just like soap is a formula. It’s a prescribed way of speaking. As a product, we are pushing it as a hygienic business accessory. So the way we’re selling it — with our tongues to our cheeks — is as a product that’s going to help you succeed in life, achieve, and win that interview over." Photo: Eric T. White

"Because the modes of distribution are so up to chance, it’s impossible to know what you’ll find where — in a weird way, these are the cheapest products in the world but they’re also incredibly rare. After only a few months, they disappear. It’s all kind of circumstance."

"It’s almost like a shell, like you’re a turtle or something. You can just crawl under it but yet there’s something stable on top where you can serve dinner ... It’s almost womblike — it’s warm and you’re encapsulated. And it’s nourishing, but it’s not — you could be eating junk food watching bad TV." Photo: Eric T. White

"This wouldn’t be used as toilet paper. I mean, if you bought it, you could do whatever you want with it ... If you’re wiping your derriere with it, it’s the same as wiping your derriere with a print or anything else." Photo: Eric T. White

"During Hurricane Sandy, I remembered that you’d walk through the streets and everybody was burning candles and there was no light anywhere, and I thought that there should be more solar lights. That that kind of energy would be more accessible. But even though I went to Home Depot, there was nothing available — so I thought this would be a cool alternative ... All of these parts come disassembled, and they’re all shrink-wrapped, so you just pop it open and build it whenever you need it."
