HYÈRES, FRANCE — This weekend, hordes of designers, curators, and editors gather at the 29th International Festival of Fashion and Photography, held since 1985 at Robert Mallet-Stevens’s historic Villa Noailles on the hills above Hyères, where red roofs tumble down slopes to the sea. This year’s edition features a jury of heavy hitters and a global selection of emerging fashion designers and photographers. Fashion jury presidents Humberto Leon and Carol Kim, of Opening Ceremony and Kenzo, oversee a panel that includes everyone from Chloë Sevigny to Spike Jonze to Maurizio Cattelan, while renowned fashion photographer Steve Hiett will work with figureheads of the photography world — from Cathy Rémy of Le Monde M to Photographers’ Gallery director Brett Rogers — to select the most promising young photographer. Click through our slideshow of 20 contestants in the worlds of photography and fashion, and see a preview of their work.

Anna Grzelewska: 38, Poland. “It’s hard to make this kind of photo — when somebody is crying, and it’s your daughter," photographer Anna Grzelewska explains. "But I like, in photography, when the actual situation is different from what you can see in the image.”

Arnaud Lajeunie: 27, France. “I was fascinated by the relationship between the waves and rocks, but I wanted to interfere — not be a mere spectator. So I poured some liquid colorant into the water, and the color brings density to the shapes and forms.”

Osma Harvilahti: 30, Finland. “For one of my photographs, someone was reading a red-covered book on the beach, and I saw the wind lift one of the pages and create this nice form. I asked the person to step away for a moment, and I stood there for 15 minutes, waiting for the wind to touch the page that way again.”
