Phoebe Philo’s aversion to press has been well-documented. So when the Cut approached her at the Time 100 Gala last night (she’s one of their most influential people of the year), she unsurprisingly tried to dodge us. “No, I’m sorry,” she said, laying her delicate hands on our shoulders and staring into our eyes with what felt like deep sympathy and resolve. “I cannot.”
When asked why, she replied: “Why don’t I talk? I do it all in the work,” referring to her many collections for Céline. She looked over our shoulder at her fellow attendees in the room. “Look at all these fabulous people here,” she said. “You should be talking to them. Look at Martha! Look at Martha’s outfit. Write about that. It’s fantastic.” And with that, she gently shooed us into Martha Stewart’s direction and disappeared.
