Tavi Plays the Perfect Girlfriend on Parenthood

Last night, Tavi Gevinson made her TV debut with a much-teased cameo on Parenthood. She played Lauren, the girlfriend of Haddie Braverman, in the all-important “college-aged daughter comes out” episode of the series.

As expected, Tavi’s role was the absolute paragon of “girl you bring home to meet the folks.” She was supportive, well dressed, and cool; she was also patient and reassuring about Haddie’s hesitation to come out. Plus, she wakes up early in the morning to run.

The lesbian-reveal episode is a not-uncommon trope. But unlike The O.C., Once and Again, and Party of Five — who handled it with a lot of angst and soap-opera drama — Parenthood kept it subtle, honest, and relatable. It’s pretty fun watching Haddie’s parents wordlessly figure out exactly what their daughter actually means by “very best friend,” and how loaded Lauren’s “I love Haddie, she’s awesome” comment is. Both moments are blink-and-you-might-miss-it subtle but hugely effective. And in case you’re wondering, yes, Tavi does have a girl-on-girl kiss.
