If you thought Lupita Nyong’o’s look from this year’s Met Gala was decidedly off-theme for the Charles James–centric event, you would be right. The new face of Lancôme went for what her makeup team calls a Josephine Baker–inspired look, complete with a bright-green Prada beaded ensemble. While social media was divided on the success of Nyong’o’s sartorial gamble, her beauty look stayed true to her signature love for color. Playing off her vintage Cartier headband (a nod perhaps to the “decorations” directive on the invite), makeup artist Nick Barose created a shimmery, smokey purple eye (using Lancôme Color Design Eyeshadow in Miss Sweetheart D) and bronze-berry lips. Barose shared with us an exclusive image of the lip color and lipstick used for Nyong’o’s lips, with Lancôme’s Le Lipstique in Sheer Chocolate and Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in Bordeaux.
