The 2014 Mermaid Parade: Dante and Chiara de Blasio’s Coney Island Coronation

This weekend marked the 32nd annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, Brooklyn’s summer celebration of scales, glitter, blue and green body paint, and all the other ocean-themed stuff participants decide to put on their bodies. This year, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s kids, Dante and Chiara, were crowned King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, which meant that they got to roll down the boardwalk in an antique wicker chair while the crowds cheered them on. NYC’s First Kids took the honor seriously by going all-out with their costumes. As you can see from this slideshow, they fit right in with all the other sea creatures.
