CR Fashion Book has been teasing their latest cover star with a shot of her in a Kanye-esque crystal mask. It turns out, they reeled in a big fish: Queen B herself, who graces the magazine’s biggest issue to date. (Guess Carine doesn’t agree with Vanessa Friedman that Beyoncé is not a style icon.) She wears the mask on one cover, and poses fresh-faced and sporting floral Yohji Yamamoto on the reverse. The spread — which is a celebration of her birthday (it hits stands on September 4, which, as any fan knows, is “B-Day”) — was shot by Pierre Debusschere, who has worked with the star on her music videos, and styled by Carine Roitfeld. In one of the most memorable shots, she poses with a Chanel surfboard strapped to her back — the surfbort jokes write themselves, huh?
Beyoncé is such a boss that she wrote her own prose poem in lieu of a cover story, which was then “remixed” by Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Forrest Gander. Examples of her prose include. “You call me a singer, but I’m called to transform, to suck up the grief, anxiety, and loss of those who hear me into my song’s form,” and “My daughter, she’s my biggest muse. There’s someone we all find out soon, more important than ourselves to lose.” Feel free to snap along, poetry-slam-style. You can also pre-order the issue here.
