How to Pull Off the Western Trend in Your Everyday Wardrobe

Western dress typically involves leather boots, denim shirts, bandannas, and fringe — but chances are you don’t want to show up at the office looking like Annie Oakley. Luckily, this season, Western trends are shaping up to be more city-friendly than ever: Western-inflected items like Hermès’s bandit scarves and Gianvito Rossi’s cowgirl boots work well with any wardrobe.

If you’re in need of more convincing, take a cue from Michael Kors: On his fall runway, the designer tapped into the urban woman’s psyche with a collection that included fringed jackets and skirts, soft chiffon blouses, and long, extra-cozy knitwear. With that as inspiration, click through our slideshow below to see 16 sophisticated ways to wear the Western look this fall.

Turquoise this season doesn't look like it belongs to your middle school art teacher. Instead, it's sleek and small -- with just a slight jolt of color.
A fringe bag doesnt skew too boho in navy or black. The bucket style is on-trend, and the chain strap is slightly ladylike.
Metal details on belts are a subtle way to evoke Annie Oakley, and they'll stand out against a pair of black jeans.
Try a non-traditional bandana for a little flourish -- like these from Ralph Lauren.  Tie in the back and let it hang over a printed sweater.
One of the best boot shapes this season is slightly Western, with a stacked heel and slip-on style.
Try a fringe jacket when you want to have a little more fun hailing a cab.
Instead of a traditional flannel shirt, try one in silk -- it's a good staple for a casual day at work, weekend errands, or even cocktails.
A wide-brimmed, vaguely Western hat is a much better way to go than a fedora.

Gaucho-style culottes are still on-trend for fall, and this pleated style has the legs for both work and play. Try them with a cropped sweater for a cool silhouette.
Cozy up with a long sweater that will work well with jeans and boots during the day -- or a casual night at a friend's house for dinner.
Try a denim jacket layered over a sweater (or under an overcoat.) This one from Topshop should please Brokeback enthusiasts.
Big chunky brown leather boots are a nice counterpoint to a flowy dress.
You may already own a denim shirt -- but it's still a good staple this fall. Stock up new ones in colorful washes, like these from J.Crew and Mango.
Suede boots add a little bit of ranch to a look without going overboard, and are completely comfortable, thanks to a lower heel.

Think of the shirtdress as an ultimate layering piece.  Underneath a long cardigan or coat, the plaid peeking out will work hard for those who typically avoid prints.
