Broad City Doesn’t Only Have Boning on the Brain

At the Broad City panel at the New York Comedy Festival yesterday, Amy Poehler joined Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, along with Seth Rogen, who will guest star as an upcoming love interest. In particular, the group talked about the way in which the show deals with sex and gender. In both categories, the women emphasized that these elements are not the show’s backbone or driving force: These are characters who have full lives outside of their relationships or their identities as women. As Glazer puts it, “The characters definitely have vaginas, but they’re definitely not on their minds when they’re talking.”

Poehler describes “many stony nights,” in which they talk about these characters as people who are “having sex but they’re also doing other things. It’s sometimes not the most important thing in your day, that you had sex. Because while you’re having sex you’re also doing other things — we all do.” Le cinéma vérité.
