Alexis Wilkinson — Harvard Lampoon editor and very good writer — makes the argument for Opening Ceremony that “peak frump” has been reached, and it’s time to herald the girls who “who try (at least a little bit).” She recalls, for example, the movie cliché of a girl removing her glasses, slipping into a bomb dress, slathering on some lip gloss, and letting everyone realize how good she looks. Wilkinson writes that it’s time to bring back giving a “rat’s ass,” as she puts it. After all, that’s just such a tiny ass to give. We can all spare it.
